Full credit and acknowledgement will be given to the original sources, allowing users to refer back to the primary data. It will be a first‐ever unique and authoritative global source of information on the world's plant diversity, compiled, curated, moderated and updated by an expert and specialist‐based community (Taxonomic Expert Networks – “TENs” – covering a taxonomic group such as family or order) and actively managed by those who have compiled and contributed the data it includes. The project represents an international, coordinated effort by the botanical community to achieve GSPC Target 1, an electronic Flora of all plants. The adoption of an updated Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC) in 2011 provided the essential impetus for the development of the World Flora Online (WFO) project. It is time to synthesize the knowledge that has been generated through more than 260 years of botanical exploration, taxonomic and, more recently, phylogenetic research throughout the world. The database is available for beta testing at State of Johor and create impetus for similar sites to be created for other biodiversityĭatabases in Malaysia. Here we present the Johor Marineīiodiversity Database (JMarine) that has been designed as a biodiversity knowledge This absence is reflected by the significant absence of Malaysia sourced biodiversityĭata on world’s catalogue such as GBIF or EOL. Biodiversityĭata in Malaysia are either based on legacy field work, shrouded within specialistĬonferences or continually being lost along the retirement of prominent researchers. InĬontrast to the wealth of biodiversity data in Malaysia, there is a dearth of cataloguesĪnd databases that house biodiversity information in a manner that is accessibleĪcross the web befitting the current global web trends of data sharing. Malaysia has been heralded as one of the mega-biodiversity countries and yet there isĪ widening chasm between the generation of biodiversity data and its accessibility. The template of our architecture may serve as a model to other research communities developing data publishing frameworks outside biodiversity research. These users have generated more than 130,000 nodes of content in the first two years of use. Our framework currently serves more than 1,100 registered users across 100 sites, spanning academic, amateur and citizen-science audiences. A system of archiving citable pages allows stable referencing with unique identifiers and provides credit to contributors through normal citation processes. Automated semantic annotation and indexing is applied to all content, allowing users to navigate intuitively and curate diverse biological data, including content drawn from third party resources. A Scratchpad allows users to organise data around user-defined or imported ontologies, including biological classifications. Our data model supports web services on standardised data elements that might be used by related initiatives such as GBIF and the Encyclopedia of Life. This is flexible and scalable enough to support multiple networks, each with its own choice of features, visual design, and constituent data. Scratchpads cater to the particular needs of individual research communities through a common database and system architecture. We describe the system architecture and template design of "Scratchpads", a data-publishing framework for groups of people to create their own social networks supporting natural history science. Digital technologies provide the means to bridge this gap.

The discipline's failure to meaningfully connect these small studies with natural history's goal has made it hard to demonstrate the value of natural history to a wider scientific community.

Natural History science is characterised by a single immense goal (to document, describe and synthesise all facets pertaining to the diversity of life) that can only be addressed through a seemingly infinite series of smaller studies.
